OUGD602 - NEST Issue 12 Theme and Submissions

As Leeds Arts University's Editorial Officer and Editor-In-Chief of NEST magazine, it is my responsibility to organise and produce the magazine's bi-annual issues. Issue 12 was to be released in November 2017.

A selection of themes were generated for issue 12 of the magazine. These included:

          Identity

          The colour red

          Dystopia and Utopia

24 Hours (work that was made in 24 hours or less)

Of these themes, Red received the most positive feedback from peers. As always, the theme should allow the brief for submissions to remain open and accessible to students on all courses, and a distinct colour would create a unique identity for this issue.

A poster was created to advertise open submissions. Students were given three weeks to submit to the new issue and were required to submit a 300pdi pdf of their work alongside their name, course, and a short description of the work.

During the open submission period NEST received 97 submissions, some of the highest levels participation so far. Submissions ranged from every course in the university, and work varied from illustration and surface pattern design to photography, sculpture and animation. Once submissions had closed, the best pieces were selected and cross-referenced with peers, tutors and the Union team to ensure a true cross-section of the university was represented.

Shy Bairns The Economist

Shy Bairns was selected to be featured in The Economist magazine as part of an article on the self-publishing revolution. Although a very small percentage of The Economist's readership will also belong to Shy Bairns' target audience, the article still provided exposure for the group and raised further awareness of zine culture and the importance of self-publishing.
