NEST
Biggest thing I’ve done this year. Officially over! done 4 mags in total, new one is the best one, everything I’ve learnt about the book making process I’ve taught myself through nest, the biggest learning curve this year (designing commercially, budget management, working with students, the university and the printers) but been the most rewarding job I’ve had by far, I’ve met the most people, given me such good knowledge and experience and also great portfolio projects
Craig Oldham
Sent him a poster, visited his studio and discussed my work and his work, he was really enthusiastic about nest and the shy bairns publications and he already knew a lot about my work and what I was up to, we talked about the similarities in the way that we work, the things we’re interested in etc. We lined up a placement and he said he wanted to do a project together. He offered me two days a week in his studio but this kept getting pushed back because of things out of my control. At the moment it’s postponed but we still keep in contact on social media and he’s going to give me a message when he’s free. In the long-run it’s probably better to postpone now because I’ll get a bigger pay-off later, because working with him would be amazing and that’s not something I want to rush.
Unit Editions/Caterina Bianchini/HATO
Also been contacting some other places, have had some conversations with them but nothing solid yet so I’ll keep going with that and see if I can get anywhere

Things are starting to take off now…
The Tetley
Worked with Orlando and ran a couple of workshops as part of The House That Heals The Soul, which was an exhibition about libraries and how people interact with library spaces. Our workshops focused on the concept of collections created two lengthy collaborative publications with the public, v successful and had good feedback from the Tetley!
New Contemps
57 artists selected out of about 10,000 applicants. Sent in an application and got shortlisted, then sent in a proposal and get selected. Former new contemporaries have included damien hirst, david hockney, grayson perry, anish kapoor etc. Exhibition is usually held in a leading arts venue, this time goes from liverpool john moores to the south london gallery across between July and January.
As a group our proposal was to simply provide the public with an opportunity to respond to the art that was being presented (first time they’ve ever had something like this). As a group we believe that there are many creative systems in place that allow artists and designers to be put in a spotlight without any real critique of the work or the system itself, and this often leads to bias at the top of the creative hierarchy, whether that’s race, sexuality, gender etc.
We’re going to provide the public with materials to document their responses, this will include basic paper materials, a list of questions that the public could answer and some prompts that would encourage them to draw or write in response to the work around them. We’d then go into the space every two weeks to collect these responses and then turn it into a series of publications. As the designer of the group it’s my job to make all of these books. I’m currently working on negotiations with GF Smith for a paper sponsorship, and the Tetley and Evolution Print in Sheffield for other material sponsorships.
Going to be a big undertaking, but also really exciting working between the two cities. We have 57 potential artist collaborators, and literally thousands of members of the public to work with. I have no idea what kind of opportunities that’s going to present but obviously there’s going to be a lot of new and challenging opportunities!
CBS Gallery
As well as this, we were also contacted by CBS Gallery which is a gallery and studio space in Liverpool. We were invited to curate a show in their space, and given very little guidance to anything else, so we have free reign on this space for six or eight weeks. Still unsure what we’re doing yet but we’re working around exploring the history of publishing in Liverpool. Design wise I’ll be creating everything from the branding and signage to the exhibition guide and the social media output. Again, a big undertaking and something different from what I usually do, but that’s obviously going to be great for making a couple more connections and giving me something new and different for my portfolio.
